While it was rather short, the original SteamWorld Dig became a surprise favorite of mine at the time, offering a structured Metroidvania-like take on the mining genre that had largely been dominated by sandbox worlds. It was a refreshing change of pace and I was excited to hear that, following SteamWorld Heist, it would be receiving a sequel.
Developer Image & Form announced yesterday that, at long last, SteamWorld Dig 2 is set to launch on Nintendo Switch on September 21st for $19.99. While the game is twice the price of its predecessor, it will be more than twice as long, offering “around 10 hours of gameplay and multiple boss battles in a big, sprawling world” that players can explore at their own pace. The company also promises that the game is “at least ten times as good” and I very much intend to hold them to that.
In addition to the Nintendo Switch launch, the game is set to launch on Steam and PlayStation 4 “a few days later.” An exact date has yet to be announced, but should be soon in addition to “a few surprises.”
