Onmyoji Beta Launches On Android And iOS In North America

NetEase’s hit mobile RPG Onmyoji has finally made it to the West in Beta form—well, it’s made it to the United States and Canada, at least. The game allows players to battle their way through an anime-inspired world as the famous Onmyoji Abe no Seimei in an attempt to restore his memory. Along the way, players will be able to summon shikigami from a gacha to build their team, which they can then pit against other players in PvP combat. Additionally, the entire game is voiced over by well-known anime voice actors, such as Rie Kugimiya, who is known for playing Alphonse Elric in Full Metal Alchemist, and Jun Fukuyama, who is known for playing Lelouch in Code Geass.

I played a decent amount of the Chinese version and, while gameplay does resemble that of a fairly standard mobile game, albeit with true turn-based combat, it is a very high-quality mobile title. The world is well-realized, utilizing an underused theme. The shikigami that players can use are fairly unique and interesting. However, attempts at following the story proved unsuccessful, so I am glad that the game is finally available in English.

The Onmyoji Beta is now available on Google Play for those with access to an American or Canadian Google account. iOS users have to sign up for the Beta here. Steam and Facebook Gameroom versions of the game are set to follow when the game officially launches later this year.
