Matt’s Picks Of The Day (10/25/2017): AER, Nightmare Boy

Hey everyone and welcome back to Matt’s Picks of the Day. It is Wednesday, October 25th, and today was a fairly good day for indie game releases. Let’s take a look.

AER: Memories of Old is, quite simply, a wonderful looking adventure game. It’s a game focused on exploration and puzzles, with the added twist that you can turn into a bird and fly around floating islands. Its art style is colorful and stunning, at that. It looks a bit like what I had wanted from Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles and I am very much looking forward to trying it out.

AER: Memories of Old is launched on Steam, the PlayStation Store, and the Microsoft Store today for $14.99. PlayStation Plus subscribers and Xbox One users can get the game for $13.49; the PlayStation Plus discount will be available until November 10th, while the Xbox One discount will be available until November 1st.

Nightmare Boy is an indie Metroidvania with great pixel art that is well-animated. In it, players take on the role of a boy who has to survive his worst nightmares and save ten other kids from those nightmares. It boasts a cast of quirky characters that will sometimes give you advice that you can choose to either follow or ignore, choices with consequences, and an assortment of abilities to unlock. It looks quite fun and the setting is fairly unique.

Nightmare Boy launched on Steam, the PlayStation Store, and the Microsoft Store today. The Steam version is $9.99, temporarily discounted to $7.99 for the week of release, while the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions are $12.99 each.

Battlevoid: Sector Siege is a real-time strategy game that drops you straight into the action. The game challenges players to be tactical and use their resources wisely, while also allowing them to customize every unit that is available to them. It also boasts procedurally generated sector maps and an AI that will actually provide you with “a real challenge.” It appears to be a fun, bite-sized take on the larger real-time strategy genre.

Battlevoid: Sector Siege launched on Steam today for $9.99, temporarily discounted to $7.99 for the week of release.

Numantia is a hex-based, turn-based strategy game set during the war between Rome and Numantia. Players can play as either side as they battle their way through a narrative that is based on the real-world conflict. Two separate campaigns allow you to see both sides of the story. Once you’ve completed both, you can challenge others to a 1v1 match in local multiplayer. I’m a fairly big fan of hex-based wargames and this one is set in an era that the wargame genre often passes over for more recent settings.

Numantia launched on Steam and the PlayStation Store today. The Steam version is $19.99, while the PlayStation 4 version is $29.99.
